Photographs

Alex Grabiec is a curator, artist, and educator based out of rural Virginia.  His photographic work considers fatherhood, how we see ourselves through images, and the relationship that photography has with narrative.  Born in 1984, Alex earned his BFA in 2007 from Longwood University and in 2016 an MFA in Photographic and Electronic Media from the Maryland Institute College of Art.  He has exhibited his art work at the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art, the Katzen Art Center at American University, and at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Southern Photography.

As the curator of exhibitions at The Longwood Center for the Visual Arts, Longwood University’s art museum, he is responsible for curating and organizing a range of historic and contemporary art exhibitions. He strives to curate exhibitions that fulfill the LCVA’s mission of inspiring people to lead more hopeful, compassionate, and participatory lives for the greater good of their communities.  These exhibitions should foster an appreciation of a wide range of experiences, forms, media, and content that promotes creativity, intellectual curiosity, and the human imagination. The arts encourage us to think more critically, build community, and feel more deeply.

As a faculty member in Longwood’s art department and honors college he integrates the exhibitions on view in the classes he teaches. Though the subject can vary from class and exhibit, he incorporates field trips and artist visits to discuss and address themes of voice, representation, and artist-specific themes and contexts. Hands-on studio-based art projects (“thinking with your hands”) reinforce lectures, readings, and group discussions. He is an advocate for exploring all the ways in which the visual arts remain a deeply necessary and profound way to communicate and express human experiences and relationships.
